Schloss Ambras Innsbruck - Innsbruck
Schloss Ambras Innsbruck is considered the first museum in the world and is one of the most beautiful and significant attractions in Austria, making it a top excursion destination in Tyrol.
In the footsteps of the past: The origin of the Renaissance castle is rooted in a particularly beautiful love story. The daughter of an Augsburg merchant, Philippine Welser, was not of noble birth for the Habsburg prince Archduke Ferdinand II (1529-1595). Nevertheless, he asked for her hand and gifted her Schloss Ambras as a symbol of love.
An extraordinary collection: In a specially built museum building, Ferdinand II also housed his numerous and partly exotic treasures made of crystal, silver, gold, or glass, as well as armor, weapons, and paintings. The first museum in the world – a true must-see then and now!
Besides the famous art and wonder chamber, visitors can also explore the impressive armories and the unique Spanish Hall. During the summer months, the original bath of Philippine Welser, the Strasser glass collection, the Habsburg portrait gallery, and the special exhibition can also be admired.
