New Year Concert
After 365 days of Beethoven's jubilee with a lot of music and few vowels - Germany celebrates one of his greatest sons under the marketing-technically somewhat eccentric title BTHVN2020 - it will be a kind of liberating blow: We celebrate the musical prelude to the New Year with songs by Francesco Paolo Tosti, who, as a contemporary of Giacomo Puccini, wrote many famous Neapolitan folk songs as well as numerous art songs. Tosti was already in his lifetime a recognized and appreciated singer, pianist and composer - and a very good friend of Enrico Caruso, for whom he wrote numerous songs. Nevertheless, this admittedly does not make Tosti a Beethoven, and Tosti's 175th birthday, which we could celebrate in 2021, if we wanted, in addition to the 105th anniversary of his death, is not the 250th birthday for which we celebrate Beethoven so much. In general, the comparison limps, no question! But if one is allowed to experience a selection of very special pearls of Tostis wonderfully catchy melodies, in the masterly orchestration of Francesco Lanzillotta, at the beginning of the year in the interpretation of the worldwide celebrated Romanian soprano Simona Mihai, framed by Borodin's sweeping orchestral dances from the opera "Prince Igor" and Rimsky-Korsakov's "Sheherazade" into the sound spheres of "Thousand and One Nights", then one inevitably forgets for a moment what waltz bliss, Beethoven and the turn of the year have to do with each other. And that is exactly why you are here in Erl for the New Year's Concert - and not somewhere else!
