Franz Hackl's 'Winter Journey'
With this project, specially conceived for the Tyrolean Festival, the Schwaz composer and jazz trumpeter Franz Hackl, founder and director of the prestigious Outreach Festival, delivers the fourth commissioned work for the Tyrolean Festival Erl after a 20-year break. Always at his side is Dietmar Küblböck, principal trombonist of the Vienna Philharmonic and in the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera, a renowned soloist with teaching activities at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, among others. Both continue to maintain an intensive collaboration, and it is the combination of their two musical worlds that we have to thank for the arrangement of this evening, which focuses on the Argentinean jazz pianist Leo Genovese. He is considered the world's best representative of his generation and has only been playing in duet with Franz Hackl since the beginning of 2020. Old and new friends who will be heard in the first part of the concert. In the first part, the tension ranges from Tyrolean folk music to jazz with trumpet / flugelhorn / piccolo trumpet and piano duo, whereby Franz Hackl reharmonises his folk tunes roots and thus falls back on his foundation, which was created by making music together with his father, one of the leading soloists in the field of wind music from the 50s to the 80s. Franz Hackl uses the musical concept of the first part - the revitalization of folk songs - in the second part as well, expanding it with contemporary musical techniques. In the process, arrangements were made for the Vienna Trombone Ensemble of his compositions "Polka Fast" (three movements), "Die Perle" and "Diandle". In addition, works such as Mozart's overture to "The Magic Flute", Wagner's "Valkyrie Annunciation of Death", Charles Gounod's "Je veux vivre" from "Romeo et Juliette", Leo Delibe's flower duet from "Lakme" and Tchaikovsky's Divertimento No. 12 from "The Nutcracker" will be performed. The highlight will be a world premiere: "FDMS - fame doesn't mean significance", involving all the artists of the evening.
