World champion Emmental - at the Hatzenstädt organic Alpine dairy More
Let yourself be spoiled at the Hatzenstädt Alpine dairy in Gränzing, near Niederndorferberg. Cheese has been made in the Alpine dairy for over 70 years - and not much has changed. In the mornings and evenings, milk is delivered from the farmers to the dairy via a star-shaped cableway system. The classic small Tyrolean dairy produces high-quality Emmental and "mountain cheese". The best spring water, organic certified raw milk (silage-free), natural calf rennet and salt: that's what goes into it. The cows receive organic feed and plenty of exercise in the fresh air. In their stalls the cows have plenty of space and soft, dry straw. The plant diversity in the meadows means that this creates the best milk for making exceptional cheese.
Impressive cultural landscape - the "Organic culture" path More
The "Organic culture" path on Niederndorfberg shows the interaction of nature, agriculture and culture in an Alpine region characterised by mountain farms. Even today the landscape is very diverse, as hundreds of small farms work to make hay, harvest timber or grow fruit. The "Organic culture" path encourages an understanding of the mountain farm lifestyle, and the importance of healthy nutrition. On the five kilometre long path (2 hour walk from Hatzenstädt Alpine dairy) you can discover and experience Alpine organic culture in the Tyrolean/Bavarian border area. 12 information boards supplement the interesting overall view with important details.
The stuff that trees are made of - wood carver Stefan Käser More
The little workshop and the showroom of wood carver Stefan Käser is perfect for a one-man operation, almost seems like a living room or a farmhouse parlour. It smells of lime wood and pine wood, or sometimes like the wood of nut and fruit trees. These wood types are the preferred carving material, and can be worked with chisels and carving tools. The Niederndorf wood carver was already a keen carver in his childhood. When he was asked to make a chess board in his favourite craft class at school, he went ahead and carved the figures too. Stefan Käser then studied his dream profession in Elpigenalp. He recently celebrated the 30 year anniversary of his company founding. His passion, and his love of wood and nature has remained with him. His wood carvings are purely hand made. You can watch him at work in his workshop, or visit the small showroom during his opening hours. You can see how a very traditional wood carver creates traditional artworks or modern art. In his workshop he works to his own designs or according to individual requests. Some of his pieces take hundreds of hours to make.
