Kufstein via ferrata
Elevation (start): 1600 m
The Kufstein via ferrata takes you along the north side of the Wilder Kaiser up to the Unteres Gamskarköpfl (1,975 m). It is divided into three sections: across a ledge; a very steep middle section; and finally a very exposed crossing leading directly to the summit of the Unteres Gamskarköpfl. The via ferrata (difficulty level D) is equipped with very few iron stirrups. After climbing for another hour you reach the Sonneck summit (2,260 m). After a well deserved break with a magnificent 360-degree panoramic view, you can descend across the southern side of the Wilder Kaiser, past the Sonnenstein, back down into the valley to Scheffau. Surefootedness and a good head for heights are essential!
Climbing harness, via ferrata set & helmet required!
- From the Anton-Karg-Haus you take the Bettlersteig trail no. 821/827 following the signs to the Kaindlhütte. At the first fork head north on the Güttlersteig no. 821 towards Sonneck and the trail takes you to the entrance of the Kufstein via ferrata.
Approach time: about 2 hours
- The return from the summit is via the ridge heading southeast and along the Güttlersteig trail back to the Anton-Karg-Haus. Alternative: You carry on climbing to the Sonneck (about 1 hour from the via ferrata exit) and then follow trail no. 821 over the Kopfkraxen and past the Sonnenstein to the Kaiser-Hochalm. From here there are various paths back down into the valley to Scheffau.
