Bella Ciao - Italian Folk

"Bella Ciao" - an evening of wonderful Italian music! An ensemble of top Italian musicians around the accordionist and musical director of the ensemble, Riccardo Tesi, will reinterpret the great classics of their homeland on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 8 pm in the Kultur Quartier Kufstein.

The premiere of this milestone in the history of Italian music took place on June 21, 1964 at the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, and today it is the basis of the work of all the artists who, with great success, bring the Italian folk tradition to the stages of the world. Fifty-five years later, the most important stage show of the Italian folk revival will now be seen with a great cast, bringing the timeless songs back to the stage in a new guise. Riccardo Tesi gathered for this purpose the current greats of the folk scene in Italy for a ravishing concert. Together with some of Italy's most distinguished folk musicians, such as Elena Ledda, Lucilla Galeazzi, Riccardo Tesi and Alessio Lega, it was decided to revive this heritage and carefully feed it with new influences and insights. The result is not only an extremely successful stage show, but also a carefully crafted album that can easily compete with the greats of the time.

"Bella Ciao", every child in Italy knows the song. Originally it was written to denounce the exploitation of women rice workers in the Po Valley in Italy. It gained great fame during World War II as a partisan resistance song. The old partisan and women workers' songs have not only retained their expressive power, but their messages of freedom, peace and civil rights are of very new and burning relevance in today's globalized world. BELLA CIAO is a lesson in democracy, a historical novel woven of music, sounds and lyrics, carried by the most important voices of social and political song in Italy over the last 30 years.

After the war, an interpretation by Yves Montand helped "Bella Ciao" gain new popularity. Among many other artists, the "Toten Hosen" as well as Konstantin Wecker played the song. And Netflix made Bella Ciao the summer hit of 2018. A remix version of an old protest and partisan song became a YouTube hit with over 22 million clicks thanks to a Netflix series.
