The Erl passion plays
The Passion play in Erl started in the year 1613 and is the oldest one among the German-speaking countries.
After religious controversies during the time of Reformation in the 16th century, the inhabitants of Erl started to play out of gratitude for God’s protection against illnesses like the plague and wars.
The house was only built for the Passion play, it can’t be heated, has a unique architecture and amazing acoustics. In 2019 it will be
60 years old. Every six years, approximately 600 amateur playersfrom the village’s 1450 inhabitants participate in the Passion play.
