OPERA: Vincenzo Bellini - La Sonnambula
Since the inauguration of the Festspielhaus bel canto has been the vital catchword. At the opening of the Festspielhaus in December 2012 the first finale of La Sonnambula by Vincenzo Bellini was performed. The performance was both a promise and an obligation. Now finally the entire opera is to be staged. Since the legendary rediscovery of the work by Maria Callas, Leonard Bernstein and Luchino Visconti at La Scala, the opera has become a challenge for all opera houses as its story about the sleep-walking peasant girl is generally accepted as being of secondary importance, whereas the musical perfection and bel canto singularity of this score are absolutely at the forefront. Here, through melody and singing, expression becomes the event in itself, the ‘story’ is only a fragmented backdrop for the most beautiful musical ideas of the genius Bellini. A young cast of singers now ventures to explore this bel canto myth under the experienced direction of Gustav Kuhn.
