OPERA: Donizetti & Romani: The Elixir of Love
Elisir d'amore: the title is the program. Love and its catalyst, the elixir, are the main motifs of the opera: Nemorino loves the much sought-after Adina, and the rival appears on the scene in the form of the grand officer Belcore. Adina doesn't really want anyone, but takes one as bait for the other, and the triangle game is done. It is seasoned by the appearance of the quack Dulcamara, who sells wine to the naïve Nemorino as the "love potion of Queen Isolde" ... These constellations offer enough opportunities for comic scenes, the music reveals even more. Individual bars and whole passages leverage the comedy and lend not only the main characters more spiritual depth. They also make it possible to seriously deal with the various ideas of love in this opera and to ask whether "love" exists at all, or only our longing for it.
