On the threshold to modernity: Russia & Finland

Poetic melancholy is conveyed by the fairy tale painting "The Enchanted Lake" by the Russian composer Anatoli K. Ljadow. He leads into fantastic worlds and presents two central works by the most famous Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius. Since its creation in 1904, his Violin Concerto has been considered a happy synthesis of solo virtuosity and fabulous instrumentation. Timothy Chooi, 25, winner of the Joseph Joachim Violin Competition, plays the demanding solo role. Artistic doubts and political uncertainties determined the development of Sibelius' First Symphony. Valentin Uryupin, winner of the 8th Sir Georg Solti 2017 International Conducting Competition, will assume the musical direction of the programme with the highlights of late Romanticism in Northern Europe.
