EASTER IN ERL: Parsifal
Some mistakenly believe that Wagner had become religious in his old age when he wrote Parsifal. Since in his works Wagner had addressed everything from his personal emotional conflicts to theories of opera and political programs, the only thing that was still missing was the occult and metaphysical. And it wouldn’t be Richard Wagner if he hadn’t reached the conclusion that religion and its message need to be liberated from institutions and replaced by art. “Redemption for the Redeemer!" Art as the possibility of veridicality and explanation for the fundamental nature of things, not as instrumentalized ritual. Which goes to show that Parsifal is in best hands at the Festspielhaus.
