KUFSTEIN - the fortress town

Surrounded by meadows, woods and lakes and dominated by the mighty mountain range of the „Kaiser“ - that is where you will find Kufstein. The charme and attraction of this town lies in its various contrasts. Century old culture competes with impressive nature. Centre and the town´s landmark is the fortress.

Not only the fortress but also many other historical buildings and monuments dominate the town:

  • The Sparkasse building at the Oberer Stadtplatz (upper town square) reminds of the bourgeoisie in the 19th century.
  • Right across there is the so-called Egger building, dominated by Art Nouveau with its renowned mirror hall.
  • At the Madersperger monument in the Kienberg street you meet history made of stone.
  • The Spindler monument was built in memory of the Kufstein citizen who last won over the turks in Kalafat .
  • On the heroe's hill you will find a huge Bronze statue of Andreas Hofer, he was a Tyrolean hero and rebel.
  • The German national economist  Friedrich List has been immortalized in perfect marble.
  • The castle ruin Thierberg has a war history. Around 1285 it was mentioned as castle owned by the Freundsberger. Around 1580 the castle's chapel became a place of pilgrimage.
  • At the Unterer Stadtplatz (lower town square) you will find the town hall with its uncommon step gable, quite impressive is the front with its figures and the coat of arms gallery.
  • The parish church St. Vitus (1400) is a late gothic hall church. In the 17th century it was turned into a baroque style church and renovated in 1840 in late classical style.
  • The Marien fountain built in 1863 is the centre point of the Unterer Stadtplatz.
  • Pilgrimage church Maria Kleinholz - already in 1670 a chapel had been erected. The big fire in 1703 also destroyed the Kleinholz church. The reconstruction took decades. Around the turn of the century construction changes had been made. Today the church consists of a Baroque central construction.
